An exciting and inspiring course which prepares learners for further study in Higher Education; providing a solid foundation of direct and transferable skills to a wide range of careers as well as in the Performing Arts. This is a highly practical specification, providing learners with the opportunity to work as either performers or designers on a number of different live performances. During the course, all candidate will study a minimum of two complete performance texts plus three key extracts covering a range of periods and contexts. Candidates will also participate in a minimum of two performances, one devised and one text performance. Candidates will explore the working methods of a range of theatre practitioners through their exploration and performance work. Live theatre visits, Master Classes and specialist workshops are also a part of this interesting and varied programme of study.

AS Specification

Unit 1: Learners reinterpret a text to create a piece of theatre which is a combination of the selected text and original ideas. Unit 2: Learners will explore a complete performance text written before 1956, and watch a live theatre production to learn about the processes and practices involved in creating live theatre.

A2 Specification

Unit 3: Learners engage with a stimulus to create two pieces of theatre in different style; one an interpretation of a text of their own choice and the other a devised piece. Unit 4: Learners will explore two complete performance texts which were written after 1956. They will watch a least one more live theatre performance to further enhance their understanding of processes and practices involved in interpreting and performing.

Career Prospects

Drama and Theatre Studies A-Level can lead to further study in Acting, Theatre Studies and Performing Arts in Higher Education at Degree or HND Level. This course is recommended if You are thinking of going into medicine, law, public relations, journalism, diplomacy, politics, social work, hospitality, tourism and leisure and of course any form of acting or jobs in the theatre. It can be used as part of your course to broaden your studies and may lead to a career in the Performing Arts’ Industries, which is currently a massive growth area in South Wales. This course complements many other subjects and is useful in building confidence and improving a broad range of skills, it is beneficial in a wide range of careers. Entry Requirements

6 GCSEs at Grade C or above including English/Welsh, GCSE Grade C or above in Drama is desirable, but not essential in all cases.
