Music Lecturersí Jazz Album Success

The recent 'Journeys' album by Dave Jones, Course Co-ordinator for the Foundation Degree in Popular Music at Neath Port Talbot College was chosen as jazz CD of the week in the London Evening Standard newspaper.

Jazz critic Jack Massarik who wrote this jazz cd of the week review, says "Port Talbot's Dave Jones is an extraordinary pianist". See the full review on

The 'Journeys' album was inspired by the visit Dave made to Washington DC in 2009 at the request of the Welsh Assembly, to perform at the annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival. He began composing the material for the album the day after returning from Washington, and the album was recorded and released in 2010.

Dave's trio features Ashley John Long on bass (a graduate from the RWCMD in Cardiff) and Lloyd Haines on drums (currently studying at the RWCMD in Cardiff). They are joined on the 'Journeys' album by a number of guests including the Mavron Quartet (RWCMD graduates based in Cardiff) and award winning saxophonist Lee Goodall who teaches at the RWCMD.

The trio perform regularly in jazz clubs, arts centres, and festivals in Wales and England, including the Vortex in London (where the trio launched their previous cd 'Impetus') and more recently the Oxford Jazz Festival in April 2011. Dave's 2008 'Impetus' album was reviewed in the Independent on Sunday in Jan 2009 by jazz critic and author Phil Johnson, who says "On the marvellously catchy opener, "The Leopard", Jones' piano style recalls Ramsey Lewis for easy sparkle and lilt, and Herbie Hancock for chordal invention". Dave is currently collaborating with the Irish drummer/composer Kevin Lawlor. This collaboration has resulted in the formation of the Dave Jones Quartet, which produces new compositions and performs and records them in Ireland and Wales. The Quartet's recent short tour of Eire will be followed by performances in South Wales in August this year, including the Aberjazz Festival in Pembrokeshire.

In 2011, Dave also put in performances at the Welsh Proms, Pontypool Jazz Festival, and Llanelli Jazz Festival with the leading jazz trumpeter Steve Waterman. Towards the end of the year, Dave was working on recording a new album with the Welsh jazz group 'Burum' who have performed at the Brecon Jazz Festival and Smithsonian Folklife Festival (USA) in recent years.
