Art and Design Courses

An exciting and intensive course designed for those students who wish to explore and experiment in a variety of Fine Art media, materials and techniques including drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media and photography. Through the analysis, interpretation and evaluation of Fine Art practice and the art of others, you will gain an appreciation and understanding of their historical and cultural context. This course enables you to create and produce your own artwork and ideas through self-directed study.

AS Specification

The AS represents the first year of a two year A level qualification but it can be studied separately. It consists of one unit: UNIT 1: Personal Creative Enquiry (40% of A level), internally assessed, externally moderated.

A2 Specification

The A level consists of the AS Unit 1 plus two additional units: UNIT 2: Personal Investigation (36% of A level), internally assessed, externally moderated. UNIT 3: Externally Set Assignment (24% of A level), internally assessed, externally moderated.

Career Prospects

Fine Art may be combined with either Arts or Science subjects thus providing career opportunities in a wide variety of areas form Print /Media, Illustration, Television, Film and Video, Computer Aided Design, Textiles, Photography, Stained Glass, Youth and Community Work, Architecture, and Arts Management. Other career options are Education, Art Therapy, Criticism and Journalism.

Entry Requirements

6 GCSEs grade A-C to include English Language and/or Mathematics, plus an Art and Design related subject.

Course Costs

Range of art materials/equipment approx. 30 A4, A3 Sketchbooks approx. 3-8 each (available in college ELC) A1 portfolio approx. 10 Memory stick approx. 10 Printing/photocopying costs- variable Students will also need access to a good quality digital camera. SLR cameras can be hired from the college (Small refundable deposit required) Students may have the opportunity to attend various educational visits, e.g. art galleries/museums approx. 10 (1 day)
