AS/A Level Graphic Communication
Art and Design Courses
Graphic Communication is the art of informing, persuading, provoking or entertaining, using symbols, drawings, photographs and typography to convey concepts and/or emotions. This course will teach students how to bring ideas to life using a broad range of traditional media, materials and techniques, as well as utilising digital processes using industry standard software. Students will develop skills in research, experimentation, idea generation, idea development/refinement, creative making and evaluating.
AS Specification
The AS represents the first year of a two year A level qualification but it can be studied separately. It consists of one unit: UNIT 1: Personal Creative Enquiry (40% of A level), internally assessed, externally moderated.
A2 Specification
The A level consists of the AS Unit 1 plus two additional units: UNIT 2: Personal Investigation (36% of A level), internally assessed, externally moderated. UNIT 3: Externally Set Assignment (24% of A level), internally assessed, externally moderated.
Career Prospects
Successful completion of the programme may lead to further studies in Graphic Communication/Design, Typography, Illustration, Digital Photography, Architecture, Animation and Advertising. This subject combines well with AS/A level Fine Art, ICT, Photography, Textiles and Media Studies.
Entry Requirements
6 GCSEs grade A-C to include English Language plus a related subject (Art and Design, Graphics, D&T)
Course Costs
A range of art materials/equipment - approximately £30 A3 Sketchbook/Display Book – approximately £8 Memory Stick – approximately £10 Students will also need access to a good quality digital camera. SLR cameras can be hired from the college (Small refundable deposit required) Students may be offered the opportunity to attend various optional educational visits

All units are internally assessed and externally moderated
